Thursday Round-up: Mathena Lifts Lady Cyclones Past Science Hill; Cyclone Rally Falls Short

Marlee Mathena hit a shot with 6.4 seconds remaining to lift the Lady Cyclones to the win.

It was a back-and-forth battle from the onset as the Lady Hilltoppers held a 15-12 lead after a quarter of play, and the game was tied at 19-19 at the half.

Science Hill pushed the lead out to double-digits after the third quarter, but Elizabethton used a 14-3 run to take the lead and set up the closing back-and-forth battle.

Mathena had 12 points to lead Elizabethton, while Renna Lane had 10 points. Reily Whitson added eight points.

An Elizabethton rally came up short on Thursday night.

The Cyclones erased a 10-point deficit to a single possession with seven seconds remaining, but Science Hill hit a pair of free throws to secure the win.

The first half was a back-and-forth battle as neither team could get much separation. Science Hill led 10-7 after a quarter of play, and the teams traded shots as Elizabethtnt railed 23-21 at the half.

After Science Hill was able to extend the lead in the third, it set the stage for the Cyclone rally in the fourth.

Nate Stephens had 16 points for the Orange and Black. Jackson Hobbs scored 10 points.
