It was an offensive shootout on Stoney Creek Friday night. Unfortunately, Unaka came out on the wrong end.
The Rangers dropped a hard-fought 71-46 decision to Chuckey-Doak on opening night at Goddard Field Friday night.
Unaka had to battle back from an early deficit.
Hayden Roper scored on a 56-yard touchdown for the Black Knights, while Dominic Hahnlan recorded a 32-yard touchdown as Chuckey-Doak took a 14-0 lead midway through the first.
Unaka got on the board as Brynin Repass found Connor McKinney for a 24-yard touchdown. Repass added the two-point conversion as the Rangers closed the gap.
The Black Knights scored on a 48-yard touchdown before Unaka answered with a 76-yard screen pass touchdown to end the first quarter.
CD led 21-16 after a quarter of play.
Hayden Roper opened the second-quarter scoring with a 38-yard touchdown before Micah Gray answered for the Rangers with a 30-yard touchdown catch. Roper, however, responded with the Black Knights with a 63-yard score.
Chuckey-Doak pushed the lead to 45-22 at the half with a Roper touchdown and a 25-yard field goal.
The Rangers, however, didn’t go quietly.
Unaka recorded a safety to open the second half, and Repass hit McKinney for a 47-yard touchdown as the Rangers scored 10 points quickly to pull with 45-32.
The Black Knights found the endzone as Roper scored on a 58-yard run, but Unaka battled back once again as Ashton Fuller scored on a short catch.
Chuckey-Doak led 52-38 after three complete quarters.
After Roper scored from 49 yards out, Gray scored on a one-yard touchdown pass to close the gap once again.
Chuckey-Doak, however, was able to secure the game in the closing minutes.
