Unaka upends UH in sweep

It was a night of celebration, and the Rangers knew exactly how to celebrate.

Unaka picked up a 71-70 victory over University High on Friday night on Stoney Creek. The Lady Rangers made it a clean sweep with a 67-42 victory over the Lady Bucs.

Unaka picked up their first conference win of the season in the boys’ game. After the Bucs took a 19-12 lead into the second quarter, the Rangers battled back, but found a late UH run give the Bucs a 38-28 lead at the half.

The Rangers trimmed into the deficit in the third quarter by outscoring UH a slim 21-20 margin. However, Unaka continued to fight to storm into the lead in the final minute. University High was unable to get a last second shot off as the Rangers secured the win.

Travis Overdorf tallied 24 points in the win, while Kyler Lewis ended with 16 points. JC Cocklin tallied 12 points in the game.

In the varsity opener, the Lady Rangers held a 7-4 lead after a quarter of play, and extended it to 26-18 at the half.

The Unaka defense flustered UH in the third quarter by limiting them to just six points, while the Lady Rangers tossed in 14 points in the quarter to pull out to a double-digit lead. The final quarter saw Unaka explode for 27 points to secure the win.

Cheyenne Drew led the way with 23 points, while Kaitlyn Weaver tossed in 14 points. Sierra Wright added 10 points.

Elise Howard had 12 points to pace UH.
