Warriors, Rangers fall in region clashes

It was a tough night for Happy Valley and Unaka in Week 9 as both teams were handed region losses.

Gatlinburg-Pittman 42, Happy Valley 36

The Warriors made a late rally, but was unable to overcome a fourth-quarter deficit in Gatlinburg as Happy Valley fell 42-36.

Happy Valley held a 6-0 lead after a quarter of play before the Highlanders scored 14 straight in the second quarter. The Warriors, however, got back on the board with five seconds remaining in the half to pull within 14-12.

The Highlanders, however, pulled out to a 16-point lead in the third, but a Josh Hammonds touchdown pulled HV back within 10 points entering the final quarter. The Warriors were able to cut it to nine, and then five points in the final minute. However, they were unable to complete the rally.

Quarterback Sage Haun threw for 324 yards with four scores, while Hammonds had 206 receiving yards and four touchdowns. Austin Hicks paced Happy Valley on the ground with 80 yards. Defensively, Dusten Sams recorded a defensive touchdown.

The loss drops the Warriors to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in region play.

Happy Valley will welcome Cumberland Gap to Warrior Hill on Friday night.

Oakdale 40, Unaka 18

Unaka was unable to keep pace with region foe Oakdale as they fell 40-18 on Stoney Creek on Friday night.

The Rangers traded scores early with the Eagles in the early minutes as Oakdale held a slim 8-6 lead. After the Eagles extended the lead to 10 points, Unaka battled back to close the lead to 16-12 at the end of the first quarter.

The teams traded scores during the second as Oakdale held a 24-18 advantage at the half.

From there, the Eagles took over.

Oakdale scored 10 unanswered points in the third and added a touchdown in the final period to take the victory.

The loss drops Unaka to 1-7 on the season on 1-2 in region play.

Unaka will travel to Hancock County on Friday night.
