This afternoon CarterCountySports.com has received inquires on the status of Mike Lunsford, the Hampton High School football head coach that has reportedly been named new coach of Cloudland High School.

Sources close to the situation have indicated that Lunsford has expressed interest and is the favorite candidate for the position; however, nothing is official until the posting leaves the Carter County Schools website on Friday, Jan. 29.

Lunsford filed transfer papers to make the transition to Cloudland nearly two weeks ago and has assisted the girls’ varsity basketball program at Cloudland in the last few weeks.

Information on the move began to circulate following former Highlander head coach Brock Pittman’s being relieved of his position.

Lunsford served as Cloudland Head Coach for 15 seasons before taking the helm at Hampton. Lunsford led the Highlanders to a state runner-up finish in 2001, and amassed a 136-40 record. At Hampton, the Bulldogs recorded a 66-15 record including a 13-1 record in this season’s state semifinals.

The position will free up the head coach spot at Hampton, with Michael Lunsford, Mike’s son, being the early favorite for the position.

Be sure to check back for more on this potential breaking story.
