Bulldogs Use Big Second Half To Advance

Hampton made sure to take care of business in the second half.

The Bulldogs erased a halftime deficit and stormed to a 36-19 victory over Polk County in the Class 2A Playoffs at JC Campbell Stadium on Friday night.

With the win, Hampton will host Bledsoe County in the second round next Friday night. Bledsoe County defeated South Greene 42-21 in first-round action.

After Polk County opened the scoring with a 49-yard punt return for a touchdown, Hampton got on the board as Dylan Trivett scored on a nine-yard touchdown run and the Bulldogs took an 8-7 lead into the second quarter.

The Wildcats scored on a 20-yard run in the opening minute of the second quarter, but Hampton countered as Dominique Burleson capped a Bulldog drive with a two-yard score.

That gave HHS a 14-13 advantage with just over seven minutes to play.

Polk County added a score late in the half to take a 19-14 advantage at the half.

In the second half, Hampton got things rolling.

The Bulldogs regained the lead midway through the third quarter as Burleson scored on a two-yard run and added the two-point conversion as HHS took a 22-19 lead.

Burleson struck again in the first minutes of the third quarter with a four-yard touchdown and two-point conversion. That gave Hampton a 30-19 advantage after three complete quarters.

Trivett capped the scoring with just under nine minutes to play in the fourth with a short run to secure the win for the Bulldogs.

Burleson had 214 rushing yards to lead the Hampton offense, while Trivett had 98 passing yards and 38 rushing yards.
