The Lady Rangers came out on the wrong side of a thriller on Monday evening.
Unaka saw Greenback hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth to take a 6-4 victory in the Region 1-A semifinals in Greenback.
The loss brings Unaka’s outstanding season to an end.
The Lady Rangers struck first.
In the top of the first, Alana Parsons hit a triple to score Trinity Bowers, and Parsons scored off a Kendall Bare single to give UHS a 2-0 lead. Lyndie Ramsey knocked down a bunt and pushed the lead to 3-0 as Hailey Taylor scored off the play.
Both teams were able to get base runners on board but unable to get a run across home plate until the bottom of the fourth when Greenback was able to tie the game at 3-3.
The Lady Cherokees put runners in scoring position in the sixth and seventh, but the Lady Ranger defense held strong as the game headed to extra innings.
Parsons opened the eighth with a leadoff home run to give Unaka a 4-3 lead.
After Unaka retired the first two batters in the home side of the eighth, Greenback evened the score with a solo home run over the left-field fence and then took the win two batters later with a two-run home run.
Sadie Shoun and Parsons had two hits, while Trinity Bowers, Hailey Gilman, Bare, Ramsey, and Taylor each added a hit.
Parsons had two RBI, and Bare and Ramsey each added an RBI.
Shoun struck out eight batters and allowed just three earned runs.
