Maryville College worked overtime on Saturday, but the result was worth it.

Former Elizabethton standout Bryson Rollins scored in overtime to power the Scots to a 20-7 overtime victory at Honaker Field on the Maryville campus.

The Scots handed Belhaven its first loss of the season, and Maryville improved to 6-2 on the year.

The Maryville roster features five Carter County athletes as Rollins is joined by Corey Russell (Elizabethton), Eli Preswood (Cloudland), Teddy Orton (Elizabethton), and Wes Erwin (Elizabethton). Maryville Head Coach Ben Fox is a Daniel Boone graduate.

Maryville broke a scoreless stalemate in the second quarter as Rollins hit Steph Carter for a 3-yard touchdown pass.

That allowed MC to take a 7-0 lead into the half.

The Scot defense limited the Belhaven offensive attack – who came into Saturday’s game averaging 40 points per game – to just seven points. That score came in the closing minutes as the Blazers went 69 yards in 12 plays and even things up with 1:38 remaining when Kolbe Blunt scored from four yards out.

Neither team was able to get anything going on their quick drives to end regulation.

After Rollins led the offense to a touchdown in the first possession of overtime, Mike Bethea intercepted a Belhaven pass and recorded a pick-six to set off the celebration amongst the Scots.

The sophomore Rollins ended the game 20-of-37 for 155 yards and finished the game with 79 yards rushing on 22 carries.

Russell had six catches for 61 yards. In all, eight Scots caught passes in the game.

The Maryville defense held the Blazers to 211 total offensive yards.

The Scots are set to travel to North Carolina Wesleyan next Saturday for another USA South clash.
