The Hampton boys team held on for a win on Monday night.
The Bulldogs picked up a 69-64 road victory over Unicoi County in non conference action, while the Lady Bulldogs dropped a tough 60-57 decision to the Lady Blue Devils.
In the boys’ game, it was nearly an even tilt in the first half.
After taking a 14-10 lead into the second stanza, the Bulldogs continued to match Unicoi shot for shot in the second quarter. That allowed HHS to take a 27-23 advantage into the locker room at half.
The third quarter saw Hampton take control as the Bulldogs outscored the Blue Devils 19-9 in the stanza. Hampton held a 46-32 advantage entering the final quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Blue Devils went on a late run to close the gap, but Hampton was able to secure the win from the free throw line.
Jordan Bentley led the way with 17 points. Mitchell Tolley and Caleb Oaks had 12 and 10 points, respectively. Morgan Lyons and Garrett Vines finished with nine points.
For the Lady Bulldogs, it was a back-and-forth battle from the opening tip.
After Unicoi took a 19-15 lead at the end of the first quarter, Hampton used a second-quarter run to take a 31-26 advantage into the half by outscoring the hosts 16-7 in the period.
The Lady Blue Devils, however, outscored Hampton 17-10 in the third quarter to take control. Both teams swapped the lead in the opening minutes of the fourth before Unicoi retook it for good midway through the period,
Leanne Guinn had 17 points to lead Hampton, while Stephanie Campbell added 13 points.
