Hampton gets broom out at Unicoi

Hampton got their broom outs for a sweep over Unicoi County Saturday night in non-conference hoops.

The Lady Bulldogs went the distance in overtime to net a 58-54 decision over the Lady Blue Devils.

Both teams battled tooth and nail with Hampton entering the fourth quarter with a 36-35 lead. Alexus Grubbs tallied six points in the quarter for the Lady ‘Dogs, but Unicoi County would force overtime with the score at 44 apiece.

Grubbs (21 points) missed a final shot opportunity at the end of regulation, but got Hampton started off right in overtime with a three-point bucket. HHS would end the period going 11-14 at the charity stripe to garner the victory.

Kim Swearingen missed a few moments of play due to injury but finished with 13 points on the night and eight rebounds. Shyanne Tuelle netted 11 points, with three shots from behind the arc. Tatum Street also netted double figures for the Lady ‘Dogs, nailing 10 points from the charity stripe (10-for-12 at the line).

Megan Garland, Madi Weir and Hope Bridgeman also tacked on key moments for HHS in the triumph.

In the boys contest, Hampton stopped a surging Blue Devil team to nab at 56-41 rout on the road.

The Bulldogs put the pedal to the metal early, outscoring Unicoi County 19-2 in the first period.

Erwin battled their way back into the game heading into halftime, trailing by seven, 24-17, but were unable to get the right momentum in their favor to get back into the game.

Point guard Coby Jones led all scorers with eight points at halftime and finished with a game-high 18 points for the ‘Dogs. Stanley Valentine went in double figures for HHS with 17 points, including a monster two-hand jam late in the fourth to give the team a 16-point lead. Chris Holtsclaw added seven points, Cheyenne Camillo added five while Adam McClain and Nathan Norris rounded out the scoring with three and two points, respectively.

Both teams will play host South Greene to open up play next week.
