The Lady Cyclones were poised to send a statement that they were ready to defend their state championship. For Happy Valley, they were unfortunate to draw the short straw.

No. 1 Elizabethton jumped out early and ran to a 69-24 victory over No. 4 Happy Valley in the District 1-AA semifinals on Saturday at Sullivan East. The win moves the Lady Cyclones to Monday’s championship game at 8 p.m., against Sullivan East, while the Lady Warriors will play in Monday’s consolation at 6 p.m., against Unicoi County.

Elizabethton came out of the gate quick as Sarah Robinson scored four early points and Kayla Marosites and Kelci Marosites added points to give EHS an early 10-0 lead. Kaylee Street snapped the run with a 3-pointer and Kaylee Johnson scored on a jumper for Happy Valley, but Elizabethton took a 15-5 lead into the second quarter.

In the second period, the Lady Cyclones started rolling as four Robinson points and a Ke. Marosites 3-pointer gave Elizabethton a 33-7 lead midway through the quarter. From there, EHS extended the advantage to 42-9 at the half.

Johnson opened the scoring in the third quarter, but the Lady Cyclones defense continue to stymie the Happy Valley offense. Annie Woods knocked down a 3-pointer for Happy Valley late in the third quarter, but Melenda Perry answered on the other end to give the Lady Cyclones a 61-17 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Ka. Marosites recorded 17 points, while Robinson had 16 points. Ke. Marosites tallied 14 points. Emily Schubert tossed in nine points.

For the Lady Warriors, Johnson scored seven points.
