Wilson scores 11 in Milligan defeat at Pikeville

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (Jan. 7, 2015) – Former Cloudland standout Courtney Wilson scored 11 points, but the Milligan College women’s basketball team fell 92-70 at University of Pikeville on Wednesday.

Although Milligan (3-13, 2-6 Appalachian Athletic Conference) never led, the Buffaloes kept it close through the first 15 minutes. Freshman guard Kelly Barnett made a free throw at the 5:35 mark in the first half which cut Milligan’s deficit to 26-22, but the Bears closed out the opening period on a 14-5 run.

Milligan then played Pikeville (13-4) fairly even over the opening 10 minutes of the second half but never drew closer than 10. After a converted three-point play by Hayley Wyrick cut the score to 47-37 three minutes after the break, the Bears answered with a 3-pointer from Kelah Eldridge on their next possession to start a 14-6 run which put them ahead by 18.

Wyrick led the Buffaloes with 15 points and seven rebounds, marking the 20th straight game scoring 10 or more points, dating back to last season. Callie Cox scored 12 points, making 2-of-3 attempts from beyond the arc, and added four assists and four rebounds.

Pikeville was led by two players, Devin Conley and Khalilah Quigley, with 16 points. Quigley added 10 rebounds for a double-double, and Jamie Castle registered 10 assists with eight points.

The remainder of the schedule this season will consist of AAC opponents for Milligan. Next up will be Bluefield College on Saturday, Jan. 10 at 2 p.m. back home. The Buffs will also be at home the following Saturday, Jan. 17 against Point University. The men will follow at 4 p.m. both dates.
